Saturday Water Brigade UPDATES: by Peter Moniz, Landscape Enhancement Chair
10/01/08

Well, the rainfall for the last week was 7.5 inches here in Tiverton!  There’s enough water content in the soil for the rest of the “manual” watering of the trees for this year.  Thanks to all that helped out. The trees are doing fine. Next spring they should have a good start to survive on their own. We will have to see what the summer of 2009 will be.

Next scheduled watering day: Saturday?,2009. Bring a water hose if you can.

09.20.08

---24 evergreens/ pines & cedars on the school grounds.

These small seedlings will act as the wind breaker that Bill White is hoping for. After time, they should do the job unless they are destroyed by the cutting or abuse from the “visitors” to the school. I am not talking about the four legged deer. Thank God that they were small plants. The digging there is not a joy, as the ground is gravel bound and compacted.

--- 6 honey locusts were planted on the south side of the south playground. This should provide some shady in the future for this play area.  Again, if they are treated with care they should survive.

--- 3 shrubs were planted by dumpster to provide some screening of that “object”.

--- There may be a need to water one more time (the last week of September).

NEXT scheduled day is SATURDAY 27th,2008  8:00am

Bring a water hose if you can."

The watering for Saturday [September 6th] has been cancelled!!!!!!!

Hanna (the tropical storm, hopefully not the hurricane) has been scheduled to this for us. It looks like she will do it without a watering hose. Last Saturday, I and MJ Downing watered the shrubs and small tree that were transplanted at the Community Service Day. --Peter Moniz

07.02.08  About the Summer Water Brigade Program
Without the volunteers, Ranger's landscape would be barren, by now.  Young trees and shrubs cannot survive without regular care.  Peter and Charlotte's loyal volunteers showed up on Saturday mornings to grab bucket and hose water, mulch, and tend to the new plantings.  YOU can be part of the Fall crew!  Just show up any dry Saturday. By donating this time, you will help our school retain its green and healthy landscaping. This also makes a great Community Service job for students.  Contact pmmoniz@cox.net for more info... and thanks!

"Your efforts in providing this community service will ensure that our trees survive the summer and thrive for future generations. Also, the time spent serving as a Ranger helper will provide a monetary credit to the America the Beautiful grant, which helped to fund the purchase of these trees.” –Peter Moniz, Tiverton Tree Commissioner

Ranger Project Update
-The tree bid was not posted on the last Town Council Agenda, thus a two week delay for the next step in the procedure to complete the America the Beautiful grant. It is on the town council’s agenda for this Tuesday.
If that gets done, on a positive note-----------------
-DPW should pick up those trees soon and plant them, (if their schedule works out for available time next week.)
-DPW picked up the six “donated Trees” from Sylvan Nursery. They are at the town’s DPW yard and hopefully they will be planted in the upcoming week. I will water them this Sunday and if needed on other days.
-Need to get the water brigade up and running. Erin have there been flyers sent out with the kids for volunteers?
Other info.:
-I might be able to obtain concrete blocks for additional seating for the learning center from Roger Williams U..
I have to confirm this with the next level of RWU administration. If yes, need to find a way( a lift and truck) to get them to Tiverton, they weight a “few” pounds.

The Tiverton Tree Commission is seeking donations for the Ranger School Landscape and Enhancement Project.
Peter Moniz, chairman of the Tiverton Tree Commission, said the project's intent is to plant trees and to create a tree grove with benches to serve as a teaching space. Mr. Moniz said he hopes to complete the grove with a piece of art.

"There are many rewards in planting trees" he said. "When trees are planted on school grounds, the trees provide for a sense of place and offer a calming effect on the young children who attend classes there."
The commission will also apply for grants to supplement the costs of trees and supplies, Mr. Moniz said.

All donations should be mailed to Tiverton Tree Commission Donation Fund c/o Tiverton Town Treasurer, Tiverton Town Hall, Tiverton, RI 02878.
